AJANG

Honeybun has a nephew named Elijah, nicknamed Ajang. He looks cute in an Asian horror flick kind of way. Think Toshio of The Grudge, but smiling.

When Ajang was 3, he couldn’t talk properly. He just mumbled while staring into space.

“Shmolomolo mashemashe hamanyama eeeek,” he’d typically say.

Whenever I asked him something – anything – he always had the same reply: “Shee shee.”

He said “shee shee” a lot it actually became scary. Think Toshio saying “shee shee.”

Then life happened. His parents separated. His mother went to work abroad. His father got him and his older brother to live with him in a funny place called Talaba in Bacoor, Cavite. So we didn’t get to see him for 3 years.

A couple of weeks ago, we finally saw him again. Ajang still looked the same. Still cute in an Asian horror flick kind of way, only bigger now. Think Toshio of The Grudge 2.

Surprise, surprise, he talks clear now. No more “shee shee.” I think he’s even special. He pretends to be a game show host, asks us math questions and then assigns us scores such as 52 and 436 – and then manually adds them up and remembers them after 5 minutes or so when announcing the winner.

Freak-o.

My favorite Ajang story would have to be the following:

Back in his “shee shee” days, Ajang was as usual just curled up into a ball in one corner, staring blankly into space. His cousin Egboi, a flaming gay teenager complete with Bali Brown-dyed hair, went up to him and teased him.

“Mute,” Egboi said.

(Nothing from Ajang, who was still just staring blankly into space.)

“No tongue,” Egboi followed up.

(Nothing from Ajang, who was still just staring blankly into space.)

“Special child,” Egboi said, challenged.

(Nothing from Ajang, who was still just staring blankly into space.)

“Stupid,” Egboi said, defeated.

All of a sudden, a reaction from Ajang. Still curled into a ball and staring blankly into space, he looked at his flaming gay cousin and mouthed two words – and nope they’re not “shee shee.”

“Bobo ka,” he said.
